Vistatec Life Sciences – In Focus – Episode 19 with Jonathan Gardow

Blog, Life Sciences — In Focus

Jonathan Gardow, Vice President of Business Development at FOMAT Medical Research, sits down with Host María Mateos on this episode of Life Sciences – In Focus to explore how his team is reshaping the way patients engage with clinical trials.

Jonathan has spent over 15 years in the field, working in various roles that have provided him with a unique perspective on the patient journey. From helping physicians enter research for the first time to improving reimbursement systems, his career has consistently focused on breaking down barriers to participation. At FOMAT, he now leads commercial strategy, site activation, and business development, with a clear mission: make research more accessible, particularly for
communities that have historically been overlooked.

Rethinking the Traditional Site Model

One of the central themes of the conversation was FOMAT’s model as an Embedded Research Organization (ERO). Instead of relying on standalone research sites, FOMAT integrates clinical trials into existing physician practices. The difference is profound.

In a traditional model, patients may walk into an unfamiliar clinic and meet a research team they have never seen before. With an ERO, the introduction to a study comes from a trusted doctor who has often been caring for that patient for years. This simple shift builds a foundation of confidence and has proven to increase both enrollment and retention.

As Jonathan put it, “It’s almost like a cheat code.” When patients hear about a trial from someone they already trust, they are more likely to listen, ask questions, and consider enrolling.

Diversity as a Core Strength

Clinical research in the United States has long struggled with diversity. The majority of participants tend to be Caucasian, leaving many communities underrepresented in studies that shape future therapies. FOMAT has turned that trend on its head.

According to Jonathan, roughly three-quarters of FOMAT’s enrolled patients come from diverse backgrounds, and more than half identify as Hispanic. Many of the physicians in their network are also Hispanic, creating a natural bridge for communication and trust.

This is not just about numbers. For many of these patients, clinical research is more than an option; it can serve as a standard of care in regions where access to healthcare is limited. By embedding research into community clinics, FOMAT is opening doors for people who might otherwise have been unaware of clinical trials.

Technology That Supports, Not Replaces, Human Connection

The conversation also touched on how FOMAT utilizes artificial intelligence to enhance, rather than replace, patient engagement. A quick follow-up is critical when someone expresses interest in a study. Waiting several days can mean losing that patient altogether.

FOMAT uses AI tools to respond within minutes, gather basic pre-screening information, and ensure patients know they have been heard. Importantly, AI does not replace human recruiters; it simply frees them to focus on the deeper conversations that build long-term relationships. As Jonathan noted, “AI does not replace the human touch. It augments it.”

Retention: The Human Side of Research

Recruiting patients is one challenge. Keeping them engaged through the full course of a study is another. Jonathan explained that retention often comes down to trust and empathy. Whether a patient is frustrated by a lack of results, juggling family responsibilities, or struggling with side effects, they need to feel supported by the people around them.

FOMAT’s model gives physicians and clinical staff the tools to bridge that emotional gap, reminding patients why their participation matters and helping them see the bigger picture. High retention rates in studies, such as obesity trials, which typically see large dropout numbers, are evidence that the approach is effective.

A Commitment to Community

Beyond the clinic walls, FOMAT actively engages with the community. From local health events to charitable initiatives, Jonathan and his colleagues believe that research organizations must practice what they preach. If the mission is to serve underrepresented populations, then being present in those communities is essential. As Jonathan shared, this commitment extends across the company, from the leadership team to individual staff members. Everyone is encouraged to find ways to connect, support, and raise awareness.

Looking Ahead

Jonathan reflected on both the opportunities and the challenges facing clinical research. Equity in access remains a pressing issue, particularly when it comes to the translation of study materials and the timely consent processes. Something as simple as a delayed Spanish translation of a consent form can prevent a patient from joining a trial.

The future, in his view, lies in awareness, trust, and follow-through. By combining community-based care, diverse physician networks, and innovative technology, FOMAT is building a model designed for today’s patients and tomorrow’s breakthroughs.

Jonathan’s perspective is a reminder that progress in life sciences is not just about science itself. It is about relationships, communication, and trust. His work at FOMAT demonstrates that when research meets patients where they are, the entire system benefits.
